Start with Why

Writer and self-described optimist Simon Sinek’s book ‘Start with Why—How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action’ was a pivotal point in my career. It turned everything I do in marketing and comms inside out and upside down in the best possible way.

Instead of approaching any action I take, thing I’m trying to sell, concept I’m trying to convey by starting with what it is and how it works, I now start with why. Instead of asking chatGPT to paraphrase the concept, let’s hear it straight from the source:

My recipe for applying this to your work and general approach to things:

Ask yourself:

  1. Why are you doing blank?

ie. I am writing this blog post about Sinek’s book because (hint everything to follow in the sentence after because is your why) it’s a more human way to communicate with people and by golly it works.

  2. What are you doing?

ie. Summarizing a strategy and turning it into action items as a gift to you for being here.

  3. How are you doing blank?

ie. Read it. Live it. Breath it. Share.
